 Our Director Minimize

We have great pleasure to announce Rebecca Gruber as the new Artistic Director for the Des Moines Gay Men's Chorus.

We are excited about the vision and enthusiasm that Rebecca brings to the chorus. She has many thoughts and ideas that we think you will find exciting in regards to the future of the Des Moines Gay Men's Chorus. She has already formed strong relationships with other Des Moines cultural organizations, and will be an admirable spokesperson for the chorus. Rebecca has creative ideas for fundraising and community involvement for the chorus. At the regional and national level, she has already taken steps to lead us in greater involvement with other GALA choruses. All these are qualities we were seeking in an artistic director.

For those of you not familiar with Rebecca, we would like to share a portion of her credentials.

Rebecca's education includes a Bachelors degree in Music Education from Simpson College, a Masters Degree from Southern Methodist University and a soon to be completed Doctorate in Choral Conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her recent professional experience includes being an instructor of music at Simpson College from 1995 through 2002. Since 2004 she has been the Director of Music at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Des Moines.

Rebecca has been involved in nearly 40 festivals, workshops and concerts as conductor, clinician or presenter. In addition, she is known throughout the Midwest for her performances as a soprano soloist. As you may well know, she served as an interim conductor for the Des Moines Gay Men's Chorus during this past December holiday series. Previously she performed with the chorus in such arrangements as Hodie, Standchen, When We No Longer Touch and The Promise of Living with the latter being performed not only in concert but also for the inauguration of Tom Vilsack, Governor of Iowa.

We are planning a very informal reception to introduce and welcome Rebecca into her new position on Monday, May 15  as part of the start-up of rehearsals for our performances at the Matthew Shepard Scholarship Dinner (June 2) and at Pride (June 11). More details will soon follow with the specifics of the reception and rehearsals. We hope you can attend and extend your congratulations to Rebecca whether you will be singing at the performances or not.

Finally, we would like to thank all those involved in the selection process. This includes not only the selection committee but also the chorus members who participated in the evening of the "trial conducting" sessions. Your comments, thoughts and suggestions were all greatly appreciated and helpful during the selection process. Thank you all.
