transcendent
We are TRANScendent, a member-founded ensemble of the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus directed by Tristan Miedema. Formed in direct response to anti-trans legislation in Iowa, our group was created to uplift and empower transgender and non-binary voices through the power of music. We are one of only a dozen ensembles of our kind in the country and serve as a beacon of hope for trans and non-binary individuals across Iowa, the Midwest, and beyond.
TRANScendent exists to affirm that there is space for us in the choral world and in the broader LGBTQ community. We are a call to action for visibility, inclusion, and representation. Through our voices, we show that we are here, we are whole, and we will not be erased.
Our performances are woven into the full concert season of the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus while also expanding our reach through independent outreach appearances. We have performed at the 2024 GALA Chorus Festival and were the headliner act for the 2025 Trans Lives Festival at First Unitarian Church. In 2025, we were honored with the One Iowa Courageous Six Changemaker Award. Named after the six plaintiffs in Iowa’s landmark Varnum v. Brien marriage equality case, this award recognizes those who speak out and lead with purpose in the pursuit of LGBTQ equality.
Small group ensemble members must be:
Current singing members of the full chorus unless special exception is made by the Artistic Director of the large group.
Available for outreach performances and events when given advance notice.
Able to memorize all music performed.
Committed to regular attendance for rehearsals and performances. Any unexcused absences would be a breach of membership in the small group.
TRISTAN MIEDEMA
Social Media Coordinator, TRANScendent Director & Section Leader
Since TRANScendent was formed in 2023, the member founded ensemble has been a source of courageous hope for our trans & non-binary community, offering needed visibility in today's social climate. Tristan prioritizes cultivating the ensemble as a safe and inclusive space for its members, offering private gender affirming vocal coachings, as well as engaging outreach performances. TRANScendent is one of only a dozen registered GALA trans and non-binary ensembles in the world, and is proud to be based right here in Iowa.
Some of the group’s highlights include TRANScendent's first GALA performance at the festival in Minneapolis 2024 as well as the closing performance of Trans Lives Festival in Des Moines 2025. In June of 2025, TRANScendent premiered it's very first commissioned piece, "They Cannot Erase Us" written by Pax Ressler with lyrics by Joseph Shapiro.
